A Dining Room Change-Up

Happy Wednesday sweet friends! If you happen to follow me on instagram {what? you don't follow me on instagram??}, you may have seen a little sneak peek of our dining room. There have been a few changes over there.

I really needed our house to work for us more efficiently and authentically. I wanted it to truly reflect us as a family. I wanted to embrace all the warm tones that this old house has, and I did all this while knowing that everyone else out there is white washing everything in their homes. It's okay to be different! I love different!

I moved some furniture around and shopped the basement as usual, emptied out some cabinets to fill the shelves and went back to all natural, thrifted, mismatched chairs. This works so much better for us. There's something so warm and welcoming about old wood, don't you think? And I want that, I want our home to be welcoming to others. Real life happens here, and this dining area is often filled with messy little hands, spilled watercolors, the occasional chicken {smile}, it's a real workhorse of an area. It's our gathering space, my favorite kind of space.
xo,
Amy

  6. I LOVE this room! I am not really doing any of the whitewashing trend either. A few rooms is fine, but not my whole house! This room is so lovely and cozy. I adore your collection of old chairs!

  7. The whitewashed look leaves things looking tired (IMHO). I like things uncluttered and also like things to feel clean-able, though a few 'antiqued' or 'shabby chic' pieces can definitely add a homey or farmy (or vintage) quality... I'm speaking about the little dresser your room showcases. It's all VERY comfortable and 'rich' looking (not in $ but in quality) and the chairs help with that! The color of the walls is unique and very much adds to the enriched feel. It comes across as very natural -I don't think it's overdone or looks 'decorated' like some others.
I like the way you use to describe what you're doing here: " a real workhorse of an area. It's our gathering space, my favorite kind of space." I have been busy putting together plans for my FUTURE home (not in sight yet, but I want to have plans in place), and I had been separating those ideas into separate concepts: Workhorse area, favorite space, gathering space... so I find this an interesting thing to contemplate! Thanks for sharing it.

  9. Many people make the mistake of filling up with professional type photos of their family members and this really doesn't add to the decor at all. Professional photos do not really do much to look at all.
