What I Learned Today

Our youngest son watches TONS of documentaries. He's only seven, but he just loves watching them. Last night he was watching his first in a Discovery Channel series on tornadoes. I sat down to watch with him and share this passion of his for a moment.

What I took away from the show was something so very different from my son. He saw the destruction and scientific data of the storm and I saw a beautiful picture of humanity. As I watched so many people loose their entire existence, I was most impressed by how God's people in times of great distress, loose all of their pretenses, differences of color fade away, and we find ourselves on a level playing field. Disaster is an amazing leveler and in an instant people love on and care for one another just the way God intended.

It was so refreshing and renewing to see that at our core, we are truly made in His image. Even in all the sin and corruption that envelops us every day, at the moment of a disaster, we revert to our most basic instinct, goodness and love. What a beautiful reminder that God's creatures are good and decent just the way He intended.

That must be just what heaven will be like. When all of the corruptions of this earth fade away, and all that's left are the beautiful and pure creatures that God intended. Oh what a day that will be when we are in heaven with our Father!
